WASH – Water, Sanitation and Hygiene

Toilet facility in a primary school

Most primary schools in Nigeria do not have tap water and toilet facilities. The children go home in the middle of classes to drink water when they feel thirsty. When they need to use the toilet, they either go to the bush or go home. Of course, when they get home, they do not return to the classroom because of the distance. Those who go to the nearby bush stand the chance of being kidnapped. Those who survive kidnapping may contract diseases or be beaten by snakes. Lack of WASH facilities discourage children from going to school. Parents are also worried about the safety of the children going back and forth from school to drink water and use the toilet.

To improve the health, safety and well-being of school children, there is urgent need for WASH facilities. UBEC recommends tap water, three modern toilets for boys and three for girls.
